Surveillance planned for speed traps. RAK Police want to stop vandalism

Cops in Ras Al Khaimah are to install 24-hour CCTV to catch vandals targeting speed cameras.
The move follows an attack last week when a radar along the Shaml Al Ramsi road was sprayed with paint.
It is the second such incident in a matter of weeks and authorities have vowed to stop it happening again.
“It is difficult for us to monitor such acts at the moment, so people think that they can get away with whatever they do,” said Lieutenant Thaer Al Najjer, of the Ras Al Khaimah General Traffic Department.
“But we are currently studying a plan to install surveillance cameras across the entire road network to deter such acts of madness in the future.”
He said that the surveillance cameras will be linked to the RAK police operations room 24 hours a day and that officers on duty will be able to swiftly respond to any acts of vandalism.
Al Najjer said perpetrators may be disgruntled motorists angry after being ordered to pay hefty fines for violating traffic rules.
And he insisted speed cameras are not a money making scheme but a means of ensuring safety for all road users.
“We are increasing our awareness campaigns to the public and in schools to teach people about the dangers on the road and the importance of having speed radars as life-saving devices,” said Al Najjer.
Police found the vandalised speed camera covered in paint on Friday, just weeks after a similar incident. They said such behaviour was “irresponsible”.
